Introduction

"The time was present day, April 20th _____. You can say I was…"

Germany lost his footing and almost was crushed by the heavy weight coming down above him. He strained to get his feet back to support the load he had been balancing for the past…hour? The thought of the time gave him a stomachache.

"...in a situation, it all started last year…"

"Can I help you with something sir?" The clerk of the store approached the tall, stiff German looking at the selection with a furrowed and slightly intimidated expression. Germany, Ludwig, was holding a tiny booklet titled, "How to Propose to Your Girlfriend." The clerk raised his eyebrows, sure proposing for the first time was a nervous experience, but he didn't think a book on how to do it was necessary.

"I am looking for an engagement ring…the best you have."

"All diamonds then?"

"Well her favorite color is green so…emeralds too."

"Any color of gold you prefer?" The clerk threw the question from the back room. Germany stepped closer to the display case to spot the pudgy man searching drawers. He wasn't sure what the seller meant and answered any gold was fine. The man came back with some rings with different gold bands and the center gem cut various shapes. Germany picked up one, examined and repeated this step to the others. The buyer checked his booklet and muttered 'two months pay'. "So how long have you two been together?"

"…I met her during the war, a friend's sister and my sister's best friend. I was not on the best terms with her family at the time." Ludwig chuckled a little, "She tried asking me out many times during our service and I was oblivious to her affection. Then she said something that made me realize, she always said 'I live for love' and she changed it to 'I live for my love'." Germany just wanted this one time to show his commitment…give his heart to her. One ring caught his attention, "This one."

The clerk hummed approval to the choice, "Do you know her ring size?" The owner had to laugh when the man fished out a looped piece of string. "You really are surprising her aren't you? Normally I see couples come in together and the woman picks out the ring."

Germany's brow furrowed at this. That piece of information wasn't in his book, but if other people did it, "Should I have done that?"

The man was in the back once more, resizing the band, "I personally think it's more romantic to surprise them and you'll both be back to choose wedding bands if all goes well." The owner returned with the ring the appropriate size, "The importance is to know she'll say yes."

Confusion etched into his face, "How do I know if I'll be asking her this for the first time?"

"Well she loves you and you love her right?" A nod, "you get along well living together, both financially stable?" Another nod, "So she'll say yes," the man presented the ring in its box, Germany was still bothered, those were speculations, reasonable, but still speculation. He needed a definitive answer, a definitive answer from her, "otherwise make her brother or your sister ask if she would marry you."

"Ah," that wasn't a bad idea at all and smiled in gratitude, "thank-you for the advice."

"My pleasure, sir, now I have to ask…" the older man leaned against the glass display, his hand concealing the side of his face to the window next to them, "that gentleman's been staring at us for the past couple of minutes, do you know him?"

Germany glanced and grimaced at the sight, "Ja…sadly. That's mein Bruder."

"Oi! West!" Prussia, Gilbert, waved. His awesome nose that was pressed against the glass left a mark on the window as he hurried to the door and inside. "What are you doing, West?" Prussia flung his arm over the agitated Germany, "Are you taking my awesome advice and getting a stud?" The older brother showed off the diamond stud on his awesome left ear. The jeweler examined and commented it was a nice cut, "Of course it's a good cut it has to look as awesome as my awesome self." Prussia then noticed the box in Germany's hand and took it unnoticed from the little brother.

"What's this, West, a watch?" Gilbert's attempt to open the box was foiled when Ludwig snatched the box away and moved towards the register to pay for it.

"It's none of your business!"

Prussia smirked. His little brother was never good at keeping secrets, not with his awesome interrogation skills. He leered behind the younger, remarking to his awesome self, "Well it's definitely too small to hold a watch…"

"Bruder…" Germany warned.

"Keeping secrets, what sneaky business could West be up to? Maybe I should ask Felicia she would probably like to know West is in a jewelry store, buying something when it's no one's birthday or any special holiday."

Germany seized the front of Prussia's shirt, "If you breathe a word to her I will punch you in the throat!"

"Kesesesese~, careful with your threats, West, we have a witness."

"You're the one who started the threats!" He could see it in his big brother's eyes if he didn't tell him what it was this instant Prussia would be running to Italy to spill the beans not there was much beans to spill at the moment. "Listen, I'll tell you, but at our house, Ja?"

"Alright!"

The purchase was made and Prussia was left in the dark to the clerk's meaning of 'Good luck' until they were home. In West's office Germany handed the box to cease his brother's constant questioning since they left the jeweler's. Prussia was left smirking at his displeased family member when he knew what was in the case. "So you're taking Japan-san's advice and 'taking responsibility'?"

Ludwig grimaced, "Ja…."

Gilbert gave the box back, "Well if you want to be tied down."

"Bruder…you like Felicia."

"I know. She's the most awesome beer-drinker and prank-phone-caller, not as awesome as me though."

"Prank calls?"

"Yeah, she called the Rich Boy pretending to be France and said she ordered a piano from him weeks ago. Hahaha, he actually believed her!" Something just occurred to Gilbert, "Oi, West, if she says no can I…?"

"Nein."

His lips formed a pout, "Jeez you're fun…I guess there's always her brother."

"NEIN!"

"You can't have them both, West!"

"He'll be your brother-in-law, Dummkopf!"

"That's not relation by blood."

"You…there's something wrong with you. Although I have to say it's better than your attraction to Maria."

"Oh yeah, she's living with Schwester West. I should go pay her a visit, bring her some flowers…" Prussia started his overlord chuckle. Ludwig could only shake his head. "Come on West I explained it to you." Yes, the twisted logic that it was impossible to not want to sleep with someone almost as equal in awesomeness as himself. From what Sister Germany told him though, they were only giving each other 'sibling affection', so the conclusion was Gilbert's perversions were simply a ruse to annoy the younger brother.

"But seriously, Bruder," Germany regained his older brother's attention, "you can't tell anyone about this. I want this to be a surprise, got it?"

"You got it, West."

"Promise me."

Prussia put in hand up in an oath, "I promise on Old Fritz's grave to not tell anyone."

One week later:

"Oh come on, you two, it's so obvious!" Gilbert was losing faith in the awesomeness of his sisters. The two came to the German brothers' house for a visit. "West got a _____ for _______!"

Louise sighed, "Bruder, I'm not interesting in what Ludwig got for whatever reason."

"Can you give another hint?" Maria groaned. She was the only one to attempt at guessing at the two blanks. "Considering all the nouns and verbs there's over…"

"Jeez, Schwesterherz, you don't have to prove you're smarter than me. Let's see…" Prussia took a minute to think what else he could give away without breaking the promise and upsetting Old Fritz. "Ah, I got it! The second part is for a person, a very special and important person to West."

The sisters look at each other and both smiled, "West got you a gift Bruder?"

"No! Although my awesome self is pretty important to West, it's someone else."

"It's Felicia, isn't it?" Louise guessed next and Gilbert awarded her with a correct ding, "My Bruder got her a gift why is that so…?" If it was a normal gift Brother Prussia would just blab about it, but he was made to promise not to tell. Sister Germany smiled from under the mug she was drinking from, "I see, so you proposed then?"

"Hahaha! Sorry, Schwesterherz, Louise won this rou..." Gilbert was lifted by the back of his collar from his seat.

"You promised not to tell anyone!" Germany shook the elder with relentless vigor, "Didn't you!" Prussia told his high strong brother to calm down, but his method proved to annoy Ludwig more. "What about promising on Old Fritz's gave eh? Have you no pride!"

"He didn't…technically," Sister Germany answered.

"Plus why wouldn't you tell your most awesome family?" Maria pouted.

Germany released his brother to address his other siblings, "I want my family the last to know my plans, do you remember last time I was planning a surprise?" Yes, Louise's birthday, Gilbert told Italy and he proceeded to let slip the surprise party to Sister Germany.

"I don't like surprises anyway." She took another sip.

Ludwig placed both hands on the table, "Regardless I don't want this one ruined, so I need to know I can put my trust in you three that this does not leave this room. No one is to be told, through hints or even charades!" A glare was cast at Prussia, "Is that understood?"

There were shared nods, "A question though, West?"

"What is it?" A vein was beginning to appear on Germany's temple, his brother was going to cause a stroke.

"You've had a week to propose, what's the holdup?"

"I have something planned, so you don't have to concern yourself with it!" Brother Germany proceeded to excuse himself and exited to his office.

"So what now?" Maria wondered, "Didn't he visit Italy a few days ago?"

"Ja, both the sister and the brother, he wants it to be special and private." Louise took Sister Prussia's empty cup and washed the two dishes. "Although I admit he does drag his feet when making a commitment."

"That's an understatement, Schwester West. Remember when we tried to buy West a new television?" Gilbert's prompt brought back the German brother and his several excuses, but they got the new machine…six months later. "Who knows how long he'll take to propose and we'll have to suffer keeping this under wraps." The two sisters agreed with this.

"Oh, one more thing, Louise," Germany returned through the doorway, "If you wouldn't mind…asking Felicia in a hypothetical situation her answer to my proposal it would be invaluable information. Ja, thanks." As if an illusion, Ludwig disappeared as fast as he asked the favor.

"Is that what he's waiting for! Jeez Westttttt…" Prussia was ashamed at his brother's lack of….

"Spontaneity?" Prussia smiled at Sister Prussia's prompt, she was so awesome as him she was reading his awesome mind. Best sister ever.
I had this strange dream that inspired me to write this.
